10 Cool Facts About Penguins
1) A group of penguins in the water is called a raft but on land they are called a waddle!
2) The black and white “tuxedo” look that most penguin species have is a clever camouflage called countershading. When Penguins swim the black on their backs helps them blend in with the darkness of the ocean from predators viewing from above. Their white bellies help them blend in while swimming in bright surface of the ocean when viewed by predators and prey from below them.
3)Penguins huddle together help protect themselves from predators. In cold habitats, huddling helps penguins keep warm.
4) Penguins evolved to fly underwater. Most birds have hollow bones full of air to help them stay light for flying in the air. Penguins adapted to fly underwater with solid bones instead. This helps them swim without being buoyant and floating up to the waters surface.
5) A penguin’s feathers are not the only way they stay warm. A gland near the base of its tail provides waterproof oil. Penguins spend several hours every day covering their feathers with this waterproof oil and give extra attention to the task before going for a swim.
6)Penguins happily live in many locations and habitats. You can find Penguins in Antarctica and Antarctic islands, the Galapagos Islands, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, Peru and Chile.
7)Contrary to many popular cartoons and the background of this craft, you’ll never really see penguins hanging out with polar bears in the wild. Penguins live south of the equator and polar bears north of the equator in Arctic.
8)Penguin feet are adapted to walk long distances. Some species of penguins can march 60 miles across sea ice to get to their breeding grounds. A Penguin's feet are also help them steer while swimming. They use their feet like a boat rudder, angling them to help control direction.
9) Male penguins are known to give female penguins rocks as gifts in order to woo them. The Female penguins use these rocks to build their nests.
10) Penguins bodies are designed to help them swim quickly through the water.. According to animal experts, penguins are one of the most streamlined animals in the world. A penguin’s body is tapered at both ends, it has an adorable large head, short neck and elongated body. This streamlined design helps penguins swim very fast.
